

The last game in the series that took place within the confines of the globally consequential Second World War was 2008’s Call of Duty: World at War, developed by Treyarch.

In some ways, making the leap back in time after spending so many years in different speculative futures is a little jarring. In a lot of ways, that’s exactly what’s happened with Call of Duty: WWII, the 14th main entry in the highly popular first-person shooter series that returns us to the series’ inaugural setting. After original Call of Duty series developer Infinity Ward took the franchise to literal new heights in last year’s game, Infinite Warfare, it’s a little strange that the relatively new kid on the block of CoD developers - Sledgehammer Games - is the one to actually grab the series by the scruff of its neck, and drive it forcefully back to the ground toward its roots.
